Also lots of families were there in kayaks too which you can rent while you are there and go paddling off to the little islands and inlets.

It was a gorgeous day setting off for the lake and took us a couple of hours to get there but it was worth it. We were one of the first ones there it being unseasonably warm and now the park is officially 'closed' which just means it has no lifeguards by the water. It is a lovely setting with clear blue water surrounded by forest and this beach where the children swim from. Also lots of families were there in kayaks too which you can rent while you are there and go paddling off to the little islands and inlets. The children clearly love it here and have been many times before so know their way around. The water is safe to swim in as it is shallow for a long way out and there is also a play park and wooded area to play in if you get fed up of the lake. We spent all day here and also came upon a Monarch butterfly fluttering by. They are getting pretty rare in NZ lately and we are all being encouraged to plant their special plants again this year - I had caterpillars our first year here but none last which is a shame. Derek and Deb went for a nice walk up through the woods to while we were here - there is a big camping ground that comes down to the lake too. As the lifeguards weren't on duty the children had a great time climbing up on to the tower and jumping off again. And I managed to get them more or less all sitting in a row! So a lovely day had by all - we all slept well that night x
