So as they were predicting 33 degrees for the weekend again we decided to head north and east to the Pacific Coast for a breath of fresh air and a paddle.
We headed off on Saturday and drove via Ranfurly. Just south of that is the magnificent Ida Valley which is 40 kms long and on this day full of rich hues of gold.
Anyway, I digress.
So after a quick coffee break in Ranfurly served by yet another Brit who has been here for 34 years and not lost her accent yet, we headed for Palmerston and turned left (north) up the coast and stopped for a quick walk on the deserted beach of Shag Point just cos we could.
So our first stop was the famous Moeraki boulders.
Then off to Oamaru.
We were only stopping for a quick look and ended up there for two hours as the sun was shining and all the shops were open in the 'Victorian' centre of town. They have kept all the old Victorian warehouses here and people have set up shop' selling antiques, second hand stuff and 'Victoriana' and 'Steampunk' and some of the whackiest outfits you have ever seen.
They had lots of weird stuff for you to look at outside too. Derek loves this stuff weirdly enough - he even liked that weird film 'Franklin' that was out many years ago from the same genre. It is good to look at though We walked down to the Harbourside before starting off on our journey again which looked a bit different to the last time we were here waiting in the cold for the penguins to show up one evening - they didn't show and we weren't waiting around until dusk to find out if any were about today either! |
One side looks like this -
TTFN and see you then xx
