In the veggie part of the garden there was a strip of small wooden fencing that was falling to bits so I dug it up. Careful not to damage the weed supressing membrane that covers this part of the garden, one side is covered by small stones and the other which has the apricot tree and Persian silk tree (or apparently sometimes called a mimosa of some kind as we were told in Kauai, they have tons of them there) I battled with the stones falling into my newly dug trench and put down a firm but a bit wonky edging of old brick which I found down the side of the garage. It looks better than it did anyway.!!!
Seeing all the roses blooming so beautifully I thought I would bring some of the small ones in this evening.
They are not very friendly little things though, vicious thorns on them.
I had some bigger roses out for a few days and as they are passed their best now I am drying some of the petals for pot pourri or to sprinkle in the bath if I every feel that way inclined. Being a bit practical there is always the thing of getting them out of the bath before you pull the plug out, chasing them round the water with a kitchen sieve kind of takes the romance out of that idea for me a bit!
The broad beans are producing well too. I pick them when they are nice and small so they don't have the hard shell on them and they only need blanching in hot water to cook them. Yum. I love opening them up, those little beans all tucked up in those cushioned pods is just too cute. No black fly on them this year either and no aphids on the roses - yet!
I also picked some calendular petals to make a healing ointment for the unfriendly but beautiful roses. It works a treat as an antiseptic and I have an abundance of them.
So I did one of the squares and I can honestly say it nearly defeated me and although I enjoyed what I achieved, I won't be doing the wall hanging!! The pieces were so small, not good for my sausage sized fingers or limited dexterity.
I made myself a proper lunch today, just pasta, chicken, mushrooms etc and herbs from the garden and sat and watched Kirstie Allsop do her crafty thing. She has to be one of my favourite people on TV and she and Phil are on all the time here - think the Kiwis like her too. She always makes me feel comfortable and at home; she was doing her cushion for the Yorkshire show and I know I have seen it before but it brought a smile to my face. See, little things!
And I didn't just sit there either. After eating my lunch I finished quilting a project we did years ago at the quilting club we used to go to in the Triangle.
I also finished the square edging for my blue quilt too yesterday and attached it to the main body of the work - 100 3" squares later and it has come together nicely.
So TTFN - it's supposed to rain tomorrow but they always say that and it doesn't happen that often so may finish up my holiday blog.
Big hugs everyone - take care and wrap up warm xxx
